Yesterday morning saw Xiombarg (aka the Atomic Super Kitty of the Future) and myself at the vet, getting her blood drawn for the 3-month follow-up from her radiation treatment for hyperthyroidism. I will get the results on Monday, but the vet seemed pleased with her condition. If all is well, she can return to her new crime-fighting career with no worries.
Yesterday afternoon was the Can't Stop the Serenity charity event, a screening of the movie Serenity along with raffles and the opportunity to donate (along with the proceeds going) to Equality Now, a charity working to end abuse of and discrimination against women.
Speaking of equality, it is so heartening to me that Joss Whedon 'gets it' - and that he works as hard as he does to make stories where women are people. If you think that's not such a big deal, you should watch the speech (on YouTube) they played before the screening yesterday. He's talking about a press junket he was on, and getting asked the same questions over and over - in particular: "why do you write these strong women characters?" He goes through all the different answers he ended up giving, and then boils it down to: "Because you are still asking that question!!" then closes with this:
Because equality is not a concept. It’s not something we should be striving for. It’s a necessity. Equality is like gravity, we need it to stand on this earth as men and women, and the misogyny that is in every culture is not a true part of the human condition. It is life out of balance and that imbalance is sucking something out of the soul of every man and women who’s confronted with it. We need equality, kinda now.”
