the language of enculturation

I was chatting with my mother on the phone yesterday. She's headed off on a trip to Nauvoo, Illinois to see the temple(during the open house, before the dedication).

I asked her if she had the mail stuff taken care of.
Well, she said, David (the trip organizer) was in charge of that, and there were several couples going to be along, so...
*beat of confusion on my part*
No, mom - I meant the postal service; was someone going to go by the house and collect your mail.

She thought I said "male" - meaning, were there going to be men along on the trip; that is, members of the Priesthood. Perfectly reasonable question, from her standpoint.
Probably the last thing it would occur to me to ask, these days.
