I read A Million Little Pieces, James Frey's recovery memoir, about a month ago, and found it to be fairly gripping. It seems, however, that his account may have been somewhat more poetically licensed than is generally accepted in something filed under "non-fiction." The Smoking Gun has the story.

I do remember thinking the book came off as rather Chuck Palahniuk. Who, granted, has always said that people he knows and the stories they tell him are the inspiration for the characters in his work.

It will be interesting to see how this all falls out.

I've been trying to make sense of it; I just got a copy of it and it annoys me that it might not be a true story -- or that a gripping fictional story has to lie -- fictional fiction? I tried to read the story at TSG. Talk about a self-serving piece. It may be all true, but they could written it about a third of the space.
