I, as an atheist, fully support the dechristianization of Christmas, so I have no problem with "Merry Christmas," and I hope that retail establishments continue to use it. The more Christmas is associated with such secular themes as presents and candy canes, the happier I am.

But I am a laid-back atheist, so I don't intend to raise a fuss about it.

Given my schedule, the sun has alreay set by the time I get up. So for me, the time of sunrise is much more important than the total amount of daylight. Sunrise will continue to get later in the day for a little while, before turning around, which will be right about the fisrt of the year. That, for me, will be the return of the sun.

I usually go to bed around 11, so yes. But I like it better when I get to see the sun rise during the drive home, which was about mid-November.

KEXP started playing "themed" music around 3 pm: songs that talk about darkness and light. So you get "Dark Entries" from Bauhaus and "The Inner Light" from the Beatles, then go from Johnny Cash to Death Cab for Cutie. Which is exactly the way I like my radio.

As a Scandinavian-American, I'm fond of "Good Yule" which is the English translation of the typical Swedish greeting, Gott Yule.
