the cynic rides again

To me, the most interesting thing about the Deep Throat identity revelation is reading which people think he did the right thing, and which people are calling him a traitor. Oh, and the guy at Slate who is pissy because Woodward did a little misdirecting here and there; he called DT a chain-smoker, and Felt quit smoking in 1943.

Bush's deer-in-headlights (aka unscripted) answers boil down to "I'll get back to you when I've been prepped"; Rumsfeld says the rumors of wrongdoing should have been reported to some internal agency like the Justice department instead (the better to squelch them with, I imagine). Pat Buchanan and other former Nixon staffers are doing most of the frothing.

How does that couplet go?

Treason never prospers; what's the reason?
If it prosper, none dare call it treason.
