winamp3 woes

Ok, I'm obviously missing something fairly important about how one interacts with winamp, because it will never just play the cd I put in the drive, and I can never figure out what exactly I've done to make it finally go. Clicking on Play doesn't necessarily work - I do know enough to try that as an option. I think it has something to do with the damn 'playlist' options, but it's certainly counter to my intuitiveness to figure out what. I haven't been able to find much by way of documentation, either.

I know it's hardly the end of the world, but it's doubly frustrating because I'm usually pretty good with figuring out the software stuff. I keep thinking "it can't be that hard" but I'm clearly missing some key piece of information... grump.
