snow-related musings

My backyard buddha has a conical cap of snow that looks absurdly lawn-gnomelike. If I bundle up and go out I'll try to get a photo - but my little cell-phone camera can't see far enough for me to get a shot from inside.

I wonder if there will be garbage/recycle collection tomorrow? Mostly because I wonder if I will have to drag the containers out to the curb tonight. And our Pioneer Organics delivery? Hard to say.

Update: according to the Seattle Public Utilities hotline (206-684-3000, option 3), garbage collection is not happening today (Thursday) and if road conditions improve, Thursday's runs will be completed Friday, with Friday's collections being pushed back to Saturday. On the other hand, I don't know that road conditions will have improved enough in the time available, so I'll be checking back to hear the updated message later this evening.

The newspaper and mail have arrived without comment, however. I will say that not ten minutes passes without me thinking "Electricity! Yay!" We've had a few flickers, but that's it.

Which reminds me, the other night in that second windstorm a week or so ago, we lost power with the chunk of folks who suffered outages. But it was only for two hours. And I remember remarking to my mother that before the blackout storm I would have thought a two-hour outage was nigh forever, but now it was nothing. So much so that I forgot to even write about it at the time. Ah, perspective.

update 2

Well, Buddha's snow-hat lost its shape before I got myself outside, so no photos there. I walked out to the little gas station food mart about two blocks away just to see how things were shaping up. 35th is essentially clear if you don't count the stripe of snow forming a median; Trenton is icy but passable, and it seems to mainly be the backwater streets like 34th that retain much in the way of actual snow accumulation. The sidewalks were snowy but well-trafficked. I'll probably end up keeping my various appointments tomorrow after all.

Pioneer Organics, by the way, emails to say they are also delaying delivery. So it's just like the holidays all over again! with trash pick-up and food delivery on Saturday.
