it's ...fragrent

In addition to my cat, who mostly keeps to my room upstairs, I live with two other cats. Kashka, the most elderly cat in the household, has decided he is done with the litter box, and would much rather defecate on the carpet under my computer table. This in spite of scolding, loud noises, calling his name (to which he is normally quite responsive), picking him up, and picking him up and moving him to the litter box. If you do move him to the (clean!) litter box, he immediately leaps out reproachfully as though you had tossed him into a puddle of water.

I'm kind of at a loss. I don't know how to go about retraining a seventeen year old, stubbornly oblivious to correction cat to use the litter box. But we're not exactly ready to say goodbye to him, either - it isn't incontinence, but deliberate choice (you can watch him sniff around to choose the best spot, even).
