disproving the infinite monkey theory

You know the one - an infinite number of monkeys banging away on keyboards would at some point produce the works of Shakespeare.

This is arrant nonsense, and the proof is all around us. In my inbox - probably in your inbox too, if you've been using an email address for more than ten seconds or so.

An infinite number of monkeys using an keyboards don't produce Shakespeare, they produce nonsense like Buy Vicodin Online or i.n.c.r.e.a.s.e you u.n.i.t or, of all things What is the Matrix KOJGLPUQJNJTCNBEXVAY.

All advertising bugs me, to one degree or another, the same way being accosted on the street and importuned for time or money irritates me. (An aside - lately when someone insistently shakes a cup of change at me, I'm tempted to say "Thank you, don't mind if I do," reach in, and take some before heading on my way. Probably safest I continue not to, though I imagine shock might be my ally. For another take on my ire, see this Goth House.) Spam probably irritates me as much as it does because there was a time when I didn't get any. I realize it is probably futile to complain as I do, and I watch with interest conversations about spam in blog comments like the one over on Making Light, continued here, here and here, resolution here. All of which made me quite happy to be part of LiveJournal instead, yes indeed.
