I went to the Atlantic Monthly's website to change my address, and noticed a sidebar of archival material, featuring '90 Years Ago in the Atlantic' the story The Long Run by Edith Wharton. Here is the teaser quote:
"There was something fundamental the matter with Merrick: something dreadful, unforeseen, unaccountable." A short story about a man's decision not to pursue an affair.
