Actually it isn't a *whup* sound so much as a low throbbing hum at this distance. But there's a particular frequency and pitch-shift to it that's pretty diagnostic. I've never actually heard a dog make the noise "arf" either - nevertheless, dogs say arf and helicopters say whup, and you have to recognize that coding if you want to be understood.
